Our New Artists and Crafters for Summer 2017

Twice a year, in January and July, we welcome new artists and crafters into Janet & John.  Our July intake has arrived, so we thought it would be great to tell you a little more about them.  There are 7 in total, so here goes…

Animal Magnetism

Claudia from Glasgow based Animal Magnetism makes large wooden animal magnets, which she lovingly hand paints. These can be found on their own metal board in the shop, alongside her wooden bookmarks.

Blue Ranchu Designs

North Glasgow based Laura has created a wonderful range of products using her animal/plant themed artwork. Initially, we’re stocking her fine bone china mugs, super sturdy coasters and notebooks.  Later in the year, we’ll have a range of her Christmas cards and maybe some of her children’s T shirts, if we can fit them in!

Glenshee Pottery

We discovered Perthshire based Glenshee Pottery on holiday and invited them to supply their amazing bothie range to our shop. The range includes plain bothies in a variety of colours, thatched bothies, tin roofed bothies (main photo), churches, castles and also bothie bottle stoppers.  The great thing is that they’re so reasonably priced that you can create your own village!

Grace Turner Art

Grace is an emerging fine artist, based in north Glasgow. We’re initially stocking a number of her original box canvases and hope to be able to stock some prints and cards at a later date.

Keekin’ Coos

Keekin’ Coos is a business run by two sisters who are based in two different parts of Scotland but together create wonderful frames of the iconic highland cow in various locations and guises.  Using offcuts from one of their husband’s tweed shawl weaving to create the “hair” through which the coos keek (peek), the coos and many of the backgrounds are hand painted.  As we are based in Glasgow, they’ve supplied a number of Glasgow themed coos,

such as the one on the right and also a Doctor Who themed one featuring Glasgow’s blue police boxes.

Morag Perkins Photography

Morag is a West End based photographer who specialises in unusual techniques such as double exposure and freezing her subject matter before taking her photos.  Initially, we’re stocking 3 of her botanical cards, with a larger range of Christmas cards coming later in the year and hopefully some prints in 2018.

Sloyd

Following Isaac Curran’s retirement, we have pleasure in introducing our new woodworker, Glasgow based Sloyd.  John creates a variety of beautiful practical items, mostly from locally sourced wood, using traditional hand tools and techniques.  He also makes his own wood polishes, which we are also stocking.

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day in Scotland is always the fourth Sunday in Lent (as in the rest of the UK) and so the date varies each year with Easter.  This year it will be Sunday March 15th. The UK seems to be alone in tying Mother’s Day into the Christian calendar, although there is no agreement inContinue Reading
